A year ago tonight I rabbited a 1500 in Atlanta. I should have finished the race. It was one of those nights when everything is clicking.

I look back on it now and wonder what I could have run that night. It was the easiest 1000m I had ever run. If only the plan had been to just got for it instead....

Wearing my orthotics today was a bad idea

So I hadn't worn my orthotics in over a year until today. My ailing foot felt great but my legs felt like crap after a couple of miles of the Double Bridge 15k. Good thing I was just pacing some of Whiteside's kids and could back after a few miles. It was still a nice training run across the bay.

I still don't see the appeal in "racing" a distance like 15k, but whatever floats your boat.

By the way, some people have terrible taste in fashion.

Moderate edit: I loved being at a hometown road race and virtually nobody there knew who I was. I got some "Go York!"s while running through Gulf Breeze. Hmmmm...come to think of it, maybe the local mullet wrapper could do a better job following local athetes who go away to college ;) More people knew who I was at the race in Atlanta last weekend.

This Feels Familiar

I was in the Atlanta metro area this weekend to see some friends and I managed to get in a little road race. Deal spoiled my victory but after only jogging around for 6 weeks I could care less. It was fun to be back out there even if it was 30 degrees at go time.

I was doing some light reading tonight when I came across this.

If you read that like I did, we might be losing the 2007 National title because of that academic incident. God willing, that remains a rumor, but in light of the NCAA's final decision this week to strip Arkansas of two titles from 03 and 04 because of $360 of travel for Tyson Gay losing that title doesn't seem out of the real of possibility.

Of course, Reggie Bush still has his Heisman, USC lots of wins, a BCS title and of course, millions of dollars earned from it.

Nobody said justice was equal.

In true Philadelphia fan form, the masses cheered every time the Marlins scored or made a big out against the Mets. Of course, they also booed the ball-girls at Citizen Bank Park every time they missed a grounder. Go figure.

Spent the last week in Asheville, NC seeing old friends like those above while I was at Smoky Mountain Running Camp.

Well I'm also out of my so-called region. Yep, headed to Vermont right now. Not exactly the Mid-West but I'll take it for the time being so I don't have to look at corn for a couple more weeks.

As much fun was had, the long hours didn't make me want to keep it up much longer. I don't even know what day it is. It's all a blur...... for various reasons, but I must say it was awesome watching Walt and Rafeeq make the team and Drew, Charles and Lacy kicking some butt in the finals.

I'm back out in Portland for a few days before heading down to Eugene for the Olympic Trials. The Trials are going to be a huge circus (especially if this shows up) but it should be pretty cool because I'll get to see a ton of old friends, teammates and even Big Bucks Bob Braman. After the Trials I'll head back east to Madison with the truck. Until then you could kind of consider me homeless.

I'm home for a week or so before I head back out to Oregon for the Trials. Hadn't been home in ages, so it's nice to be back for a quick respite. Life is good here. Few easy runs, time with friends and family and maybe some beach in there. Hopefully the trip home gets topped off tomorrow with Florida State's third consecutive track national title. So far, it's shaping up nicely.

The trip is over, for better or worse...

Apparently, it's state-law in Oregon for gas stations to be full-service. That's convenient when filling up the truck.
I'm not sure which is more humbling: Chauffeuring a woman who's 5k pr is 19 seconds faster than mine or the men's 5k & 10k world record holder.
I actually met quite a few athletes this weekend who have the prefix "world record holder" to their name. They're all very humble.
Kenyans love Obama.
A certain American distance runner with my first name loves carrot cake as much as me but doesn't like it when he has to watch others eat it.
I got to witness an American record is person. That was special.
I might have been the only person in the crowd not that pumped about a 72-ft shot put throw. Ya, I know it's really far but it's only 2-ft more than Garrett and Dorian have been tossing at home meets. Call me jaded.

Three oxen died fording the river

I'm finally recovered from the long weekend of regionals and travel out to Oregon. So far it has been quite an experience.

Fly through Tampa to get to Atlanta for the sake flight from Tallahassee to Tampa.
I didn't miss Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN but I didn't enjoy watching the Mets win. The 3 remaining hours weren't pleasant knowing the Braves had lost and the Mets had won.
Arriving in Portland 13 hours after leaving Tallahassee only to cram into Pascal's Civic hatchback with 4 people and luggage
Hanging out with some really fast people (think 13 minute 5ks, sub 3:50 miles).
Feeling like a fat-ass for eating a cheeseburger while those fast people eat cottage cheese and fruit.
Fumbling a few hundred fliers for this weekend's Prefontaine Meet in some hot girl's cubicle down in the ACG group's section of the Mia Hamm building and not taking advantage of the situation.

We're headed down to Eugene later this week for the meet. Maybe I'll take some pictures or something. I put some here from recent events.

Missed the train

Much like the meet itself, my final race as Seminole has come and gone. A friend of mine from Dartmouth agreed that it would have been better to go out in a non-prelim race but that would have meant no regionals.

It's off to the great northwest for the week. Hopefully I'll get in some updates.

The East Regional meet begins tomorrow. I could just as easily find myself competing one more day, one more meet as I could also find myself with no more collegiate competition after tomorrow's prelim. All the work is done. The hay is in the barn.

Tis only a flesh wound

It's that time of year when there's only a few of us left hanging around training for post-season meets and sometimes our trainers get a little bored waiting around for us to finish our sessions at all sorts of odd hours. Tonight was one of those nights as our crack staff waited for the distance crew to finish up our different sessions well past 7pm.

For all their shenanigans, Brandon and Jeronimo have been outstanding additions to our support crew this year. Brandon's pushed me in rehab like I never imagined and gone way past what has been asked to keep my achilles in one piece.

Another day in the office

It was time to get back on the track today after a few days of easy living.

Bob gave us a session that would test our resolve for two reasons. It was our last long session of the season and he threw me and Dan out on the track at 1:30 pm in the heat of day.

The workout quickly turned into a death march as neither of us were properly prepared for the 5 sets of 60-60-60 (400 in 60, 200 in 60, 400 in 60) but we soldiered on and completed the task before us.

Bob reminded us that there's probably nobody else in the region more prepared than us to handle the conditions that we will face next come race time. That's always reassuring, especially seeing as how this is just typical weather for someone who's spent his entire life in it like myself.

Pony Express

Spent the weekend in Atlanta for the last chance meet at Georgia Tech. Didn't race but did get in some work pacing the first heat of the 1500 Friday night. Another guy was added to assist at the last minute but he was more of a hinderance than assistance. The race (and all others from the meet) can be found at Flotrack.org. It wasn't perfect but it was ok. Most importantly, we all came away from the meet healthy and ready for what lies beyond.

All in all, it was a solid weekend. Saw some old friends both at the track and at the river Saturday during our long run. Two more weeks to the regional meet....

The Beginning is the End is the Beginning

So we kind of had a big race this past Saturday. Finally grabbed grabbed the regional qualifier I've been reaching for the last five years.

Hopefully it won't take another five years to reach the new places I want to go.
